When WhatsApp stops working on a travel eSIM, the fault is usually in the phone’s data settings rather than in WhatsApp. A travel eSIM carries data and nothing else. If the phone is still sending data through your home line with roaming switched off, or through no line at all, WhatsApp has no connection to use.
Check which line carries your data
If WhatsApp works on wifi and stops as soon as you leave it, check these settings first.
On a dual-SIM phone, calls and data are set separately, and installing a travel eSIM does not move your data to it. On an iPhone, open Settings, then Mobile Service (Cellular in the US), then Mobile Data, and select the travel plan. On Android the menu names vary by manufacturer. Look for the mobile data preference under Network or Connections, then SIMs.
Data roaming is set per line. On iPhone, tap the line under Mobile Service, or look one level down under Mobile Data Options. On Android, open each SIM’s own settings.
- Data roaming must be on for the travel line. A travel eSIM such as Atli connects as a roaming line, through a local partner network. With roaming off it can show signal bars and still pass no data.
- Data roaming should be off for your home line, unless you have bought a roaming package from that carrier. This is the switch behind surprise roaming bills.
If other apps work and only WhatsApp fails, check that WhatsApp is allowed to use mobile data. On iPhone, scroll down the Mobile Service screen to WhatsApp in the list of apps. On Android, open WhatsApp’s app info and check its mobile data setting. Dual SIM while travelling covers the rest of the two-line setup.
WhatsApp will not verify your number
WhatsApp ties your account to your phone number. When you register, or register again on a new or reset phone, it sends a code to that number by SMS or voice call. Atli has no phone number and cannot receive SMS, and neither can any other data-only plan.
If WhatsApp asks for a code while you are away, switch your home line on, with its data roaming still off, and ask for the code by SMS or voice call. Some carriers charge for texts or calls received abroad, so check your plan.
Before a trip, three things prevent the problem:
- Verify on home wifi before you leave, and do not log out, reinstall WhatsApp or reset the phone while you are away.
- Add an email address to WhatsApp under Settings, then Account, then Email address. WhatsApp can then offer to send a login code there, but only while the SIM for your number is in the phone.
- Keep your home SIM in the phone and switched on, so codes can reach it. Backing up WhatsApp before a trip covers what to do if the phone itself is lost.
Messages send but photos do not load
Text uses almost no data and photos use far more, so a weak connection shows up in photos first.
Look at the photo before anything else. If it shows as a blurred preview with a download arrow, WhatsApp chose not to download it. On Android, a travel eSIM counts as roaming, so WhatsApp follows its When roaming auto-download setting, which downloads no media by default. On iPhone there is no roaming option: each media type is set separately, and anything not allowed on mobile data waits for a tap. Change it under Settings, then Storage and Data, then Media auto-download, or tap the photos you want.
If the photo is spinning, the connection is slow or the plan is empty. In the Atli chat, type data or usage to see what is left and how many days remain. The phone’s own data counter often shows a different total, and the network’s figure is the one to go by. If there is data left, the usual causes are a busy local network or a weak signal indoors.
Calls drop or will not connect
A voice call needs very little data, but it needs it without a break. A connection that handles messages can still drop a call.
Turn on Use less data for calls under Settings, then Storage and Data. It lowers call quality and uses less data, which can help a call hold on a weak connection. If calls still drop, move to a window or go outside. One bar of signal indoors is a common cause, and no setting fixes it.
How much data WhatsApp uses has the per-minute figures: about 0.5 MB a minute for a voice call and 5 to 15 MB a minute for video. Video is what empties a small plan.
In the UAE, WhatsApp voice and video calls are blocked on local networks. The regulator requires operators to block internet calling apps that are not on its approved list, and WhatsApp is not on it. Hotel wifi comes from the same operators, so calls are blocked there too. Whether a travel eSIM gets around the block depends on how the provider routes its traffic, so do not count on it. Messages, voice notes and photos still work. The UAE eSIM guide lists the calling apps that are allowed.
It worked yesterday and stopped today
The data ran out. Type data or usage in the Atli chat to see what is left.
The plan expired. Validity and data are counted separately, so a 7-day plan stops after seven days even with data left. Atli’s clock starts when the eSIM first connects in the destination, or 30 days after purchase if that comes first. Installing early costs nothing, but a plan bought more than 30 days before the trip can start before you arrive.
If neither, turn airplane mode on for ten seconds, then off, so the phone registers with the network again. If data still does not come back, work through the eSIM no-data checklist.
What a data-only plan cannot do
| Works on a data-only eSIM | Does not work |
|---|---|
| WhatsApp messages, voice and video calls | SMS codes from WhatsApp or your bank |
| Every other app that runs over the internet | Ordinary phone calls and texts |
| Login codes sent by email or an authenticator app | A second phone number |
If you need a number that can receive SMS abroad, you need a different product from a travel data plan.
Before the next trip
Install the eSIM at home on wifi and leave it switched off until you arrive. Verify WhatsApp while your home line is still reachable, add an email address to your account, and find the setting that picks your data line before you need it. What to do before you fly has the steps in order, and using WhatsApp abroad explains how your number and your data line stay separate.
Atli plans start at 1 GB for seven days. You buy them and check what is left in the same WhatsApp or Telegram chat, and that chat works over hotel wifi when mobile data does not.
iPhone settings names checked against Apple’s help pages, September 2026. WhatsApp and Android menus vary by version and manufacturer.
