A WhatsApp voice call costs about 0.5 MB a minute. A video call costs 5 to 15 MB a minute, which is ten to thirty times more. Texting rounds to nothing at all, and the media your phone downloads on its own is the part that empties a plan.
Text messages
A single WhatsApp message uses roughly 1 to 3 KB. A long back-and-forth of several hundred messages still comes to well under 1 MB. Emoji, reactions and stickers cost a little more and still round to nothing.
If texting is all you do, WhatsApp will not be what empties your plan.
Voice calls
A WhatsApp voice call uses about 0.5 MB a minute. Ten minutes is roughly 5 MB. An hour is roughly 30 MB.
Published figures range from about 0.3 to 1 MB a minute, and the spread is real rather than sloppy: WhatsApp adjusts quality to the connection it has. A call on a weak signal can genuinely use less data than the same call on a strong one, and sound worse for it.
Even at the top of that range, voice is cheap. An hour of calling costs about as much data as loading a dozen web pages.
Video calls
Video is the expensive one: 5 to 15 MB a minute, which works out to 300 to 900 MB an hour.
Put in plan terms, 1 GB is roughly one hour of video calling at worst and about three at best. A twenty-minute call home costs 100 to 300 MB, so somewhere between three and ten of them will finish a 1 GB plan, depending on the connection.
WhatsApp publishes no figure of its own for any of this. Every number here, including ours, is an estimate built from measurements other people have taken, which is why the ranges are wide.
If your plan is small, take video calls on WiFi you already trust rather than on the plan. Not every network qualifies, and hotel WiFi is worse than it looks for anything you would rather keep private.
Photos and videos
A photo costs roughly 100 KB to 3 MB depending on resolution. WhatsApp compresses images before sending, which shrinks the number without removing it.
Video is heavier. A thirty-second clip runs 5 to 15 MB. Share a day of trip photos into a family group and you have spent more than an hour of voice calling.
Auto-download is what turns this from a choice into a leak. WhatsApp downloads incoming photos and video over mobile data by default, so a busy group chat spends your plan while your phone is in your pocket.
Status updates and group chats
Status updates, the ones that vanish after a day, download automatically under the same setting. If your contacts post video, you are paying for video you never asked to watch.
An active group sharing media can run through several hundred MB a day. Muting it does not help: muting stops the notifications, not the downloads. Only the auto-download setting stops the downloads.
The settings that cut data use
Three settings do almost all the work.
Turn off auto-download on mobile data. Settings, then Storage and Data, then “When using mobile data”. Set photos, audio, video and documents to no media. Anything you actually want, you tap to fetch.
Turn on Low Data Usage for calls. Same menu. It costs you some call quality and roughly halves the data a call uses. On a 1 GB plan that is the difference between one video call and two.

How much data to budget
For a week of texting, voice calls and normal photo sharing, 1 GB is genuinely enough. Add daily video calls home and it is not: budget 3 GB, or keep the video on WiFi and stay on the smaller plan.
Atli sells both shapes in every country it covers: 1 GB for seven days, or 3 GB for thirty. For most trips the validity decides it rather than the gigabytes, because a fortnight away outlives the seven-day plan whatever WhatsApp does.
Messaging is the cheap end of a travel plan. Music streaming costs more per hour than a voice call, and video costs more again.
