An hour of music costs about 43 MB at Spotify’s Normal quality and 144 MB at Very High. Both numbers come from Spotify’s own published bitrates. The app moves between four settings on its own unless you fix one.

The bitrates are Spotify’s own published figures. Everything after that is arithmetic: multiply the bitrate by 3,600 seconds and divide by 8,000 to get megabytes per hour.
Very High needs Premium. Free accounts stop at High, which is still 72 MB an hour, so a free account is not automatically the cheaper one to run.
Why your usage varies
Spotify ships with streaming quality set to Automatic, which it describes as depending on your network connection. On a strong signal it moves up. That is why the same hour of listening can cost 43 MB one day and 144 MB the next.
Setting the quality yourself makes the number predictable.
What Data Saver changes
Spotify describes Data Saver as reducing data usage by showing fewer images and reducing audio quality. The images half is easy to overlook. Album art and playlist browsing happen while nothing is playing, so that traffic never appears in a per-hour figure.
Most phones also have a system-wide version of the same idea. Data saver mode on a trip covers what it does across every app at once.
Lossless and FLAC
Spotify publishes the format for Lossless, up to 24-bit and 44.1 kHz in FLAC, but no hourly figure. Uncompressed, that format would run about 950 MB an hour. FLAC typically compresses by a third to a half, which puts real use somewhere near 500 to 650 MB an hour.
That range is calculated, and Spotify does not publish the figure. It comes to roughly four times Very High, and that is enough to matter on a metered plan.
Downloading for offline listening
Downloaded music costs nothing to play. Spotify recommends keeping at least 1 GB of storage free, and download quality is a separate setting from streaming quality, so check both.
A three and a half minute track at 320 kbit/s is about 8.4 MB, which puts a hundred song playlist near 850 MB at top quality. At Normal the same playlist is about 250 MB. Download them on hotel or airport WiFi and the music costs nothing on your plan, though hotel WiFi is often slow enough that a big playlist takes a while.
Under Data saving and offline, turn off downloads over cellular, so a playlist you add mid-trip does not download itself over the plan.
How much data to budget
For music alone, almost any plan is enough. An hour of listening a day at Normal quality is about 1.3 GB across a month, and at Low it is under half a gigabyte. Atli sells 1 GB for seven days and 3 GB for thirty in every country it covers, and for a music listener the validity matters more than the gigabytes.
