eSIM or roaming: which should you use?

If your home plan already includes enough roaming data for the trip, there may be nothing else to buy. Daily roaming passes change the math quickly.

Check one thing first: does your current plan already include your destination? Some do, with enough data to matter. If yours does, there is nothing to buy and nothing to install.

These are not the same product, and the comparison is only fair if you remember that. A roaming pass usually carries your number, your calls and your texts. An eSIM carries data. Most travellers pair the eSIM with their existing SIM and get both.

The arithmetic that decides it

A daily pass repeats. A prepaid plan does not. That one difference decides most trips.

Find your carrier’s daily figure, then multiply it by the number of days you will actually use the phone abroad. Not the length of the trip: the days you switch it on. A pass triggered on eight of ten days still costs eight times the daily rate.

Then set that total against a plan bought up front. Atli’s local prices:

DestinationPlanPrice
France5 GB / 30 days$7.99
Japan5 GB / 30 days$10.99
United States5 GB / 30 days$9.99

At $10 a day, a week is $70. The plans above cost the same whether you stay four days or twenty. Carriers vary far too much for that $10 to mean anything for you, so use your own figure. Then check what the pass includes before you call the difference a saving.

For picking the allowance rather than the plan, the trip data guide has the per-hour figures.

When your carrier is the right answer

  • The destination and enough data are already in your plan.
  • You are gone two days and do not want to set anything up.
  • You need cellular calls and texts on your own number, often.
  • The phone is carrier-locked, or has no eSIM support.

Read the terms rather than the marketing line. A destination can be included at a reduced speed, or under a fair-use cap that bites on day three. A daily pass can be triggered by something you did not mean to do, like a background app sync in a taxi from the airport. The roaming charge guide covers what sets one off.

When the eSIM is the right answer

  • Roaming is charged by the day and you are away for several.
  • Maps, messaging, browsing and app calls are most of what you need.
  • You would rather pay before you go than find out afterwards.
  • Several people each need their own data.
  • The route crosses borders that one regional plan already covers.

Atli is data-only. WhatsApp and Telegram calls run on its data, but there is no phone number, no cellular voice and no SMS.

Not every travel eSIM is data-only. The Google Fi and Airalo comparisons cover the plans that do carry a number.

Keeping your own number

On a dual-SIM phone you can run both lines at once, which is what most travellers do. Pick Atli for mobile data, turn data roaming on for the Atli line and off for the home line, and switch off automatic data switching so data stays on Atli.

That stops data charges on the home line. It does not stop everything: calls and texts stay your carrier’s service at your carrier’s prices, and on some plans even a received message costs money. Check the terms, or switch the home line off if you do not need your number for the week. The dual SIM guide has the settings for both lines.

Keeping the profile between trips

Install Atli at home on reliable wifi and leave the line off until you arrive. You install one profile, once. Data plans expire; the profile does not, and the next plan you buy is added to the same eSIM with no new QR code and nothing to reinstall. There is a separate guide on installing it before you fly.

When the trip ends, put mobile data back on your home SIM and turn the Atli line off. Leave the profile where it is.

Atli prices checked against Atli’s current prices, August 2026. The daily rate is an example, not a carrier quote.

FAQ

Is an eSIM always cheaper than roaming?
No. If your plan already includes the destination, using it costs nothing extra. A prepaid eSIM tends to win when a daily charge repeats across a longer trip, and loses on a two-day hop.
Does Atli include calls and SMS?
No. Atli is data-only, with no phone number, no SMS and no cellular voice. Use app calls over its data, or keep the home SIM active under your carrier’s terms.
Will my normal number still work?
Yes, on a dual-SIM phone with the home line left active. Atli carries the data; your carrier keeps your number, calls and texts, and can still charge for them abroad.
Should I turn off roaming on my home SIM?
Turn off data roaming for the home line once Atli is handling data. That closes the data bill, but not voice or messaging charges, so check the terms or switch the line off entirely.
Is a regional plan better for a multi-country trip?
Often, if every stop is on its country list and the regional price beats buying each country separately. Compare the list, the allowance and the validity before you buy.
Do I install a new eSIM for every trip?
No. Keep the profile you already have. New plans attach to the same eSIM automatically.
