eSIM not working abroad? Check these 5 things

If your travel eSIM has signal but no data, do not delete it. Start with the selected data line and data roaming before trying anything drastic.

You have arrived, the eSIM is installed, and the internet is not happening. Start with the ordinary causes. Work through these five checks in order and test after each one. Do not delete the eSIM while troubleshooting.

Step 1: check you still have a plan

Make sure you have a plan that covers where you are standing, whether that is a country plan or a regional one. If the data is used up or the days have run out, buy another in the chat. It is added to the same eSIM automatically. Type usage to Atli to see what remains.

Step 2: check your signal

Look at the bars in your status bar. One bar means weak coverage right where you are, and that alone can break data even when everything is configured perfectly. Walk out of the basement, away from the metal shed, off the middle of the ferry, and test again.

Step 3: check the two settings

These two are the classic culprits, and both live in Settings:

  • Data Roaming must be ON for the Atli eSIM. It allows the eSIM to connect through an Atli partner network and is included in the plan price. Keep Data Roaming off on your home SIM if you want to avoid home-carrier data charges.
  • The travel eSIM must be your data line. iPhone: Settings, then Cellular, then Cellular Data, pick the eSIM. Android: Settings, then SIMs (or SIM manager), set mobile data to the eSIM.

Atli configures its APN automatically. Do not type a value into the APN fields. The APN guide explains what that setting does and why it is best left alone.

Step 4: airplane mode on, then off

On for ten seconds, then off. This drops the current network connection and asks the phone to register again. Give it a minute after switching Airplane Mode off.

Step 5: try another supported network

Some destinations have more than one supported Atli network. If automatic selection does not connect, open the mobile-network menu, turn off automatic selection and choose another operator listed for your Atli plan. Do not choose an arbitrary network: an operator can appear in the phone’s list without being available to your eSIM. If you are unsure which one to select, ask Atli in the chat.

Still nothing? Talk to a human

Do not delete the Atli eSIM. Send support your destination, phone model, what the status bar shows and which steps you tried. Atli support is available in the same WhatsApp or Telegram chat where you bought the plan, so your order and the troubleshooting stay in one thread.

FAQ

Why does my eSIM say connected but no internet?
Usually Data Roaming is off for the eSIM, or your phone is still routing data through your home SIM. Both are settings, both take thirty seconds to fix, see step 3.
Does turning airplane mode on and off really help?
Yes. It drops the current network registration and asks the phone to connect again. Wait about a minute after switching Airplane Mode off.
Should I delete and reinstall the Atli eSIM?
No. Keep the Atli eSIM installed. Data plans expire, but the eSIM profile does not. Future plans are added to the same profile automatically.
Why did my data work yesterday and stop today?
First check whether the plan ran out of data or days by typing usage to Atli. You may also have moved into an area with weaker coverage. After those checks, work through the remaining steps in order.
How do I avoid all this next trip?
Install the eSIM at home while you have reliable WiFi. After you arrive, turn on the Atli line, select it for mobile data and enable Data Roaming for that line.
