eSIM for Vietnam in 2026: plans, coverage and setup

Grab rides and airport pickups make data useful the moment you arrive in Vietnam. Atli connects through Mobifone on LTE, with no 5G.

In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Grab is a common option for hailing cars and motorbikes. Seeing the route and fare inside the app before pickup can simplify transport at busy airport exits and around the city.

Atli is data-only. It does not provide a Vietnamese phone number, SMS or cellular voice calls. Grab, Zalo, WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage, FaceTime and maps work through the data connection.

Three gigabytes covers about a week of Grab rides, maps and messaging. Vietnam is generous with cafe and hotel WiFi, which takes pressure off the plan, but the parts of a trip that use data most are the ones where WiFi is not: the ride from the airport, the walk to a homestay after dark, the bus that leaves from somewhere other than where the ticket said.

For a closer estimate, see how much data a trip really uses.

What network Atli uses in Vietnam, and why there is no 5G

Atli has one Vietnamese partner network: Mobifone on 2G, 3G and LTE.

There is no 5G. LTE is the fastest connection this eSIM reaches in Vietnam, with 3G and 2G below it. That is about the access a visiting eSIM is given rather than the state of Vietnamese networks.

Viettel and Vinaphone are Vietnam’s other large operators and neither is an Atli partner network. If you have read that an Atli eSIM connects to Viettel or Vinaphone, that is wrong. Your phone will attach to Mobifone.

There is also no second carrier to fall back on when Mobifone is congested, unlike Germany or Norway where Atli has two.

Getting around Vietnam

Grab does most of the work, for motorbike taxis, cars and food, and it is the main reason to have data at all on arrival. It wants a live connection at the moment you book rather than a good one throughout the ride. Zalo is the messaging app most Vietnamese businesses actually use, so a homestay or a driver may reach you there rather than by email.

For trains, Vietnam Railways sells the north to south service. Sleeper buses and trains between Da Nang, Hue and Nha Trang run at night and arrive early, which is exactly when you want a map and exactly when you may not have one.

What no network list can tell you is what happens away from the corridor. It describes which network the eSIM attaches to and which technologies that network carries, not geography. The Ha Giang Loop, the passes above Sa Pa and the water between the karsts in Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay are not places anyone promises a signal. Download offline maps, your accommodation address and the route back before you leave a town.

Grab needs a connection at the moment you book, not for the whole ride.

Old Quarter hotels in Hanoi and beach places in Da Nang and Phu Quoc fill up in the dry season. If you are booking ahead, compare the exact map pin with the part of town you actually want on Booking.com.

Keep your normal SIM for your phone number

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, your home SIM and Atli eSIM can have separate jobs: your own number stays on your home SIM for calls and texts, and mobile data in Vietnam comes from your Atli eSIM.

On a dual-SIM phone, set Atli as the cellular-data line and keep your primary SIM active for calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on your primary SIM to avoid unintended roaming data charges. If your carrier supports roaming, verification texts can still arrive on your primary SIM.

Read the dual-SIM travel guide for the settings to check before departure.

Vietnam-only plan or Southeast Asia regional plan?

Worth checking the numbers, because at the top of the range they meet:

PlanVietnam onlySoutheast Asia
1 GB / 7 days$2.99$5.99
3 GB / 30 days$7.99$11.99
5 GB / 30 days$9.99$15.99
10 GB / 30 days$16.99$20.99
20 GB / 30 days$28.99$28.99

Up to 10 GB the Vietnam plan is cheaper. At 20 GB the two cost exactly the same, so at that size the regional plan is simply the better buy: identical price, valid in eight countries instead of one.

The eight are Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Cambodia and Laos are not on that list. This matters more than it sounds, because Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh and the crossings into Laos are among the most common overland routes out of Vietnam. Neither the Vietnam plan nor the Southeast Asia plan covers them. Both countries have their own Atli local plans instead, from $5.99 for Cambodia and $6.99 for Laos over 7 days. Arrange one before the border, not at it.

See the regional eSIM guide if your itinerary crosses several countries.

Travel eSIM or local Vietnamese SIM?

A travel eSIM is convenient when you want data arranged before arrival. A local SIM may suit a longer stay, heavy data use or anyone who needs a Vietnamese number, and local prepaid data in Vietnam is genuinely cheap.

Viettel, Vinaphone and Mobifone all sell prepaid service, and counters at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat sell tourist SIMs. Those are separate local products rather than services supplied by Atli, and registration requirements and terms change, so check what is currently on offer before buying.

How to set up an Atli eSIM for Vietnam

Install the eSIM at home before you travel, while you still have reliable WiFi. Do not wait until you arrive: airport WiFi may be slow, require a login or fail when you need it. Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.

Installing the eSIM does not start the plan. It starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination. You have up to 30 days after purchase to make that first connection; after that, the plan starts automatically.

After arrival:

  1. Turn on the Atli eSIM.
  2. Select Atli as the cellular-data line.
  3. Turn on data roaming for that line.
  4. Leave your home SIM off for mobile data if you want to avoid home-carrier roaming charges.

Keep the Atli eSIM installed after the data plan expires. You need only this one eSIM profile: if you buy another plan later, it is added to the same eSIM automatically. There is nothing new to install. Data plans expire; the eSIM itself stays on your phone. Do not delete its profile.

FAQ

Which network will my phone use in Vietnam?
Mobifone. It is Atli’s only Vietnamese partner network, with 2G, 3G and LTE.
Does Atli get 5G in Vietnam?
No. Atli has no 5G in Vietnam at all. LTE is the best connection available on the partner network, with 3G and 2G below it.
Does Atli use Viettel or Vinaphone?
No. Neither is among Atli’s partner networks in Vietnam. Mobifone is the only one listed.
Does Atli include a Vietnamese phone number?
No. Atli is data-only and does not include a Vietnamese number, SMS or cellular voice calls. Grab, Zalo and other internet-based apps work over the data connection.
Can I keep my normal phone number?
Yes, on a compatible dual-SIM phone. Keep your normal SIM active for your number and select Atli for cellular data. Charges from your home carrier may still apply.
Should I buy the Vietnam plan or the Southeast Asia one?
Below 20 GB the Vietnam plan is cheaper. At 20 GB for 30 days both cost $28.99, so the regional plan is the better buy at that size because it is valid in eight countries rather than one.
Will a Vietnam or Southeast Asia plan work in Cambodia or Laos?
No. Neither country is on the Southeast Asia regional plan. Both have their own Atli local plans, from $5.99 for Cambodia and $6.99 for Laos over 7 days. Arrange one before you cross.
Will I have a signal on a Ha Long Bay cruise or the Ha Giang Loop?
Do not plan on it. A network list describes technologies, not geography, and nobody promises a signal on the water or on a mountain pass. Download maps and addresses before you go.
Can I use my phone as a hotspot?
Yes. Atli supports personal hotspot. Connected devices use data from the same plan.
Can I receive bank verification codes?
Atli cannot receive SMS. Codes can still arrive on your home SIM if that line remains active and your carrier supports SMS roaming in Vietnam.
Do I need a new eSIM when I buy another plan?
No. Keep the original Atli eSIM installed. A later plan is added to that same eSIM automatically, so you only need to turn it on and select it for data at the destination.
