eSIM for the UK in 2026: plans, networks and setup

Train delays, Tube changes and walking directions keep your phone busy in the UK. Atli connects through EE, O2 and Three.

While London’s Tube and bus network lets you tap through gates with a contactless card, tracking real-time National Rail delays and platform changes across Britain requires live data. If your itinerary includes regional train travel between English cities or up to Scotland, monitoring connections on the go is where a phone earns its keep.

Atli is data-only. It does not provide a UK phone number, SMS or cellular voice calls. WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage, FaceTime, maps and transport apps work through the data connection.

The UK is well supplied with free WiFi in cafes, hotels, most rail stations and much of the London Underground, which takes some pressure off the plan. Three gigabytes covers about a week of maps, train times and messaging. On unlimited plans the Europe regional plan is often cheaper than the UK one.

Three networks, and they are not the same

Atli uses three UK partner networks. No other country has three, and the difference between them matters more than the number does:

NetworkTechnology
EE2G, LTE and 5G
Telefonica UK (O2)LTE and 5G
H3G (Three UK)LTE only

If your phone attaches to Three, you get no 5G. Two of the three networks carry 5G and one does not, so 5G in the UK is a matter of which network you connect to, not a property of the country. That is a different situation from a single-network destination, where the answer is the same every time.

You do not choose. Attachment is automatic and can change as you move. The practical reading is that 5G is likely in cities and possible rather than promised, and that LTE is the realistic floor across all three.

The upside of three networks is redundancy. In most countries there is one partner and no fallback when it is congested. Here there are two others.

Vodafone is one of the UK’s four large operators and is not among Atli’s partner networks. If you have read that an Atli eSIM connects to Vodafone, that is wrong.

One more thing the table shows: no 3G on any of the three, and 2G on only one. LTE is the floor here, not a fallback above something older.

A UK plan does not cover Ireland

This is the mistake worth the most money on this page, and it catches people who have done nothing careless.

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland is not. Belfast, Derry and the Giant’s Causeway are covered by a UK plan. Dublin, Galway and Cork are not. The border between them runs through open countryside and you can cross it on a bus without noticing, which is exactly how a data plan quietly stops working.

A UK plan covers Belfast and Derry. Dublin sits outside it.

If your trip includes both, you have two options. Buy a separate Irish local plan, or buy the Europe regional plan, which covers Ireland and the UK together along with 32 other countries.

The same applies in reverse to anyone arriving from the EU. The UK left the EU, so EU roam-like-at-home rules no longer cover it automatically. Check your own plan before assuming your home allowance reaches London.

UK-only plan or Europe regional plan?

The answer flips depending on which kind of plan you buy.

Fixed-data plans, where the UK plan wins every time:

PlanUK onlyEurope
1 GB / 7 days$3.99$4.99
3 GB / 30 days$7.99$11.99
5 GB / 30 days$9.99$18.99
10 GB / 30 days$12.99$32.99
20 GB / 30 days$19.99$36.99

The gap widens with size: nine dollars at 5 GB, twenty at 10 GB. If your trip stays in the UK and you buy by the gigabyte, buy local and do not think about it further.

Unlimited plans, where it reverses:

ValidityUK onlyEurope
5 days$15.99$15.99
7 days$24.99$19.99
10 days$29.99$26.99
15 days$39.99$37.99
20 days$49.99$48.99
25 days$59.99$59.99
30 days$64.99$70.99

At 5 and 25 days they cost the same. From 7 to 20 days the Europe plan is cheaper than the UK plan, by five dollars at a week. Only at 30 days does the UK plan win again.

So if you want unlimited data for a week or two in Britain, the plan that also covers 33 other countries costs less than the one that covers only Britain. Buy the regional plan and treat the extra coverage as free.

The Europe plan covers exactly 34 countries, and Ireland, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Turkey and Ukraine are all among them.

See the regional eSIM guide if your itinerary crosses several countries.

Keep your normal SIM for your phone number

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, your home SIM and Atli eSIM can have separate jobs: your own number stays on your home SIM for calls and texts, and mobile data in the UK comes from your Atli eSIM.

On a dual-SIM phone, set Atli as the cellular-data line and keep your primary SIM active for calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on your primary SIM to avoid unintended roaming data charges. If your carrier supports roaming, verification texts can still arrive on your primary SIM.

Read the dual-SIM travel guide for the settings to check before departure.

Getting around Britain

London runs on contactless. Tap in and out of the Underground, buses and most rail with a bank card or phone wallet and the daily cap applies automatically, so there is no ticket to buy and no data needed at the gate. Buses do not take cash at all.

Most of the Underground now has mobile coverage in tunnels and on platforms, but not all of it, and the deep tube lines were the last to get it. Assume you will lose signal somewhere between stations and download what you need before you go under.

Mobile coverage still varies across the deepest Tube sections.

For intercity travel, National Rail fares change with demand and advance tickets are much cheaper than walk-up fares. Book before the day if you can. Trainline and the individual operator apps both work, and the ticket lives in the app, which is a good reason to have data at the station rather than only at the hotel.

Away from cities the picture changes. A network list describes which networks the eSIM attaches to and which technologies those networks carry. It says nothing about geography, and the Highlands, mid-Wales, the Lake District and long stretches of Cornwall are not places anyone promises a signal. Download offline maps and your accommodation address before you leave a town.

If you are choosing where to stay in London, compare the exact map pin with the nearest Tube station on Booking.com. Zone 2 on a direct line usually beats a Zone 1 address that needs two changes.

Travel eSIM or local UK SIM?

A travel eSIM is convenient when you want data arranged before arrival. A local product may suit a longer stay or anyone who needs a UK number, and British prepaid data is cheap by international standards.

EE, O2, Vodafone and Three all sell prepaid service, and you can buy a SIM in most supermarkets and phone shops without an appointment. Those are separate local products rather than services supplied by Atli, and their terms change, so check the current offer before buying.

For a broader comparison, see eSIM vs airport SIM vs pocket WiFi.

How to set up an Atli eSIM for the UK

Install the eSIM at home before you travel, while you still have reliable WiFi. Do not wait until you arrive: airport WiFi may be slow, require a login or fail when you need it. Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.

Installing the eSIM does not start the plan. It starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination. You have up to 30 days after purchase to make that first connection; after that, the plan starts automatically.

After arrival:

  1. Turn on the Atli eSIM.
  2. Select Atli as the cellular-data line.
  3. Turn on data roaming for that line.
  4. Leave your home SIM off for mobile data if you want to avoid home-carrier roaming charges.

Keep the Atli eSIM installed after the data plan expires. You need only this one eSIM profile: if you buy another plan later, it is added to the same eSIM automatically. There is nothing new to install. Data plans expire; the eSIM itself stays on your phone. Do not delete its profile.

FAQ

Which network will my phone use in the UK?
One of three: EE, Telefonica UK (O2) or H3G (Three UK). Attachment is automatic and you do not choose. EE and O2 are listed with 5G; Three is listed with LTE only.
Does Atli use Vodafone?
No. Vodafone is not one of Atli’s UK partner networks. The three are EE, Telefonica UK and H3G.
Will I get 5G in the UK?
It depends which network you attach to. Two of the three carry 5G and the third does not, so 5G is likely in cities rather than guaranteed. LTE is the realistic floor on all three.
Does a UK plan cover Ireland?
Northern Ireland yes, the Republic of Ireland no. Belfast is covered; Dublin is not. Ireland is on Atli’s Europe regional plan, so choose that or a separate Irish plan if your trip crosses the border.
Should I buy the UK plan or the Europe one?
For fixed data the UK plan is cheaper at every size, by $20 at 10 GB. For unlimited plans of 7 to 20 days the Europe plan is cheaper and covers 34 countries. At 5 and 25 days they cost the same, and at 30 days the UK plan is cheaper again.
How many countries does the Europe plan cover?
Exactly 34, including Ireland, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Turkey and Ukraine.
Does Atli include a UK phone number?
No. Atli is data-only and does not include a UK number, SMS or cellular voice calls. WhatsApp and other internet-based apps work over the data connection.
Can I keep my normal phone number?
Yes, on a compatible dual-SIM phone. Keep your normal SIM active for your number and select Atli for cellular data. Charges from your home carrier may still apply.
Do I need data to use the Tube?
No. Contactless bank cards and phone wallets work at the gate without a connection, and the daily cap applies automatically. Data helps with routing and live disruption, not with paying.
Do I need this if my phone plan is from an EU country?
Possibly. The UK left the EU, so EU roam-like-at-home rules no longer cover it automatically. Check what your own plan says about the UK specifically before you travel.
Can I use my phone as a hotspot?
Yes. Atli supports personal hotspot. Connected devices use data from the same plan.
Can I receive bank verification codes?
Atli cannot receive SMS. Codes can still arrive on your home SIM if that line remains active and your carrier supports SMS roaming in the UK.
Do I need a new eSIM when I buy another plan?
No. Keep the original Atli eSIM installed. A later plan is added to that same eSIM automatically, so you only need to turn it on and select it for data at the destination.
