eSIM for Portugal in 2026: plans, 5G and setup

Portugal puts train tickets, Sintra schedules and ride-hailing on your phone all day. Atli uses NOS and Vodafone with 5G.

Getting around Portugal often means switching between CP trains, local transit, and ride apps. Alfa Pendular bookings between Lisbon and Porto, Sintra train times, and Uber or Bolt rides are all common phone tasks.

Atli is data-only. It does not provide a Portuguese phone number, SMS or cellular voice calls. WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage, FaceTime, maps and transport apps work through the data connection.

These prices were checked in August 2026. Plans and prices can change.

Three gigabytes covers about a week of maps, CP timetables and messaging. Choose 5 GB if you post photos most days, and 20 GB or unlimited if you will work from an apartment in Lisbon or Porto and tether a laptop.

What networks Atli uses in Portugal

Atli uses two Portuguese partner networks: NOS on 2G, LTE and 5G, and Vodafone Portugal on 2G, 3G, LTE and 5G.

The two are not identical on paper. NOS has no 3G listed, so LTE is its working floor, while Vodafone still carries 3G. Both are listed with 5G, which means 5G where the device and the local signal allow it rather than everywhere.

MEO, which belongs to Altice and holds the largest share of the Portuguese market, is not one of Atli’s partner networks. If you have read elsewhere that Atli runs on MEO, that is wrong. Having two networks rather than one still helps: when NOS is congested in central Lisbon in August, the phone has somewhere else to go.

Trains, trams and the coast

Comboios de Portugal runs the Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services between Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto, with an English booking site and an app. Load the ticket before you board rather than depending on a signal at the platform.

In Lisbon, the thing data actually solves is which stop. The 28 tram, the funiculars and the metro all serve overlapping bits of the same hills, and the walk between two plausible stops can be a steep ten minutes. That is a maps problem, not a bandwidth problem, and 3 GB is plenty for it.

Lisbon’s hills can turn two nearby-looking stops into a steep ten-minute walk.

Along the Algarve and in the Douro, coverage is ordinary populated-area coverage. What no network list can tell you is what happens on a cliff path, in a river valley or inside the stone of an old quinta. Save your booking and an offline map before you drive out of town.

Morocco is a short flight from Faro but sits outside the Europe plan.

If you are choosing between Lisbon and Porto as a base, compare the exact map pin with the nearest metro or CP station on Booking.com. An address that looks central can still sit at the top of a hill nothing runs up.

Keep your normal SIM for your phone number

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, your home SIM and Atli eSIM can have separate jobs: your own number stays on your home SIM for calls and texts, and mobile data in Portugal comes from your Atli eSIM.

On a dual-SIM phone, set Atli as the cellular-data line and keep your primary SIM active for calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on your primary SIM to avoid unintended roaming data charges. If your carrier supports roaming, verification texts can still arrive on your primary SIM.

Read the dual-SIM travel guide for the settings to check before departure.

Portugal-only plan or Europe regional plan?

A local Portugal plan is the cheaper choice when the trip stays in the country. Right now, 3 GB for 30 days costs $4.99 for Portugal against $11.99 on the Europe regional plan.

Both of Portugal’s usual travel companions are on the Europe plan. Spain and France are among its 34 countries, so a Lisbon to Seville run, a drive up to Galicia or a Camino walk stays covered on one plan.

Morocco is not. It is a short flight from Lisbon, Porto or Faro, and it sits outside the Europe plan entirely, with its own Atli local plan instead. Arrange that separately rather than assuming a European plan reaches across the strait.

See the regional eSIM guide if your itinerary crosses several countries.

Does a Portugal plan cover Madeira and the Azores?

Atli sells Portugal as a single plan. There is nothing separate for Madeira or the Azores, so there is no island-specific plan to buy, and nothing that describes coverage island by island.

That is a real limit on what this guide can tell you. A network list describes which networks Atli attaches to and which technologies they carry, not where the signal reaches. If data on a small island is load-bearing for your trip, ask in the Atli chat before you travel rather than working it out on the ferry to Pico.

Nothing in the plan detail is specific to Madeira or the Azores.

Travel eSIM or local Portuguese SIM?

A travel eSIM is convenient when you want data arranged before arrival. A local product may suit a longer stay, heavy data use or anyone who needs a Portuguese number.

NOS and Vodafone Portugal both sell prepaid service directly, and MEO does too. Those are separate local products rather than services supplied by Atli, and their terms change, so check the current offer and any registration requirement before buying.

How to set up an Atli eSIM for Portugal

Install the eSIM at home before you travel, while you still have reliable WiFi. Do not wait until you arrive: airport WiFi may be slow, require a login or fail when you need it. Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.

Installing the eSIM does not start the plan. It starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination. You have up to 30 days after purchase to make that first connection; after that, the plan starts automatically.

After arrival:

  1. Turn on the Atli eSIM.
  2. Select Atli as the cellular-data line.
  3. Turn on data roaming for that line.
  4. Leave your home SIM off for mobile data if you want to avoid home-carrier roaming charges.

Keep the Atli eSIM installed after the data plan expires. You need only this one eSIM profile: if you buy another plan later, it is added to the same eSIM automatically. There is nothing new to install. Data plans expire; the eSIM itself stays on your phone. Do not delete its profile.

FAQ

Does Atli work in Portugal?
Yes. Atli provides data service through NOS and Vodafone Portugal. Both carry 5G. MEO is not an Atli partner network.
Does Atli include a Portuguese phone number?
No. Atli is data-only and does not include a Portuguese number, SMS or cellular voice calls. Internet-based calling and messaging apps work over the data connection.
Can I keep my normal phone number?
Yes, on a compatible dual-SIM phone. Keep your normal SIM active for your number and select Atli for cellular data. Charges from your home carrier may still apply.
Does Atli get 5G in Portugal?
Both NOS and Vodafone Portugal carry 5G. The connection you actually get depends on the phone, the location and the local signal, with LTE as the normal fallback.
Does a Portugal plan cover Madeira and the Azores?
Portugal is sold as one plan with nothing separate for the islands, so there is no separate plan for them. There is no island-by-island coverage information either. Ask in the Atli chat before you rely on data there.
Will a Portugal plan work in Spain or France?
Not on its own. Both are on Atli’s Europe regional plan, so choose that before the trip if your route crosses the border.
Will a Portugal or Europe plan work in Morocco?
No. Morocco is not among the Europe plan’s 34 countries. It has its own Atli local plan, which you would buy separately.
Can I use my phone as a hotspot?
Yes. Atli supports personal hotspot. Connected devices use data from the same plan.
Can I receive bank verification codes?
Atli cannot receive SMS. Codes can still arrive on your home SIM if that line remains active and your carrier supports SMS roaming in Portugal.
Do I need a new eSIM when I buy another plan?
No. Keep the original Atli eSIM installed. A later plan is added to that same eSIM automatically, so you only need to turn it on and select it for data at the destination.
