eSIM for Malaysia in 2026: plans, 5G and setup

Landing at KLIA, data becomes useful before you have even left the airport. Atli runs on CelcomDigi with 5G, and the 20 GB regional plan is cheaper.

Grab is widely useful for city transport in Malaysia, from airport runs at KLIA to short hops across Kuala Lumpur and George Town. The app needs a live data connection when you request a ride, settle the fare, or message your driver.

Atli is data-only. It does not provide a Malaysian phone number, SMS or cellular voice calls. WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage, FaceTime, Grab, maps and payment apps work through the data connection.

Atli eSIM plans for Malaysia

DataValidityAtli priceGood for
1 GB7 days$3.99A weekend or a long layover
3 GB30 days$6.99About a week of maps, Grab and messaging
5 GB30 days$9.99One to two weeks across KL and Penang
10 GB30 days$16.99Longer trips with regular photo sharing
20 GB30 days$30.99Remote work or frequent hotspot use
Unlimited5 days$14.99A short trip with heavy data use
Unlimited30 days$69.99A month without tracking each gigabyte

These prices were checked in August 2026. Plans and prices can change.

Three gigabytes covers about a week of Grab rides, maps and messaging. Malaysia is generous with WiFi in malls, cafes and hotels, which takes pressure off the plan. Choose 5 GB if you post photos most days. At 20 GB the Southeast Asia regional plan costs the same as the Malaysia one.

What network Atli uses in Malaysia

Atli uses one Malaysian network: CelcomDigi (registered as Celcom Axiata Berhad) on LTE and 5G.

That is the pre-merger legal name. Celcom and Digi completed their merger on 30 November 2022, and CelcomDigi is what the network is called today. It is the same operator, not a different one.

Two things follow from there being only one. There is no second carrier for the eSIM to fall back on when the first is congested, unlike Germany or Portugal, where there are two. And no 2G or 3G is listed here, so LTE is the floor rather than a fallback below it.

Maxis is not an Atli partner network. If you have read that Atli runs on Maxis, that is wrong.

Getting around KL, Penang and Borneo

Grab does most of the work here, for rides and for food, and it wants a live connection at the moment you book rather than a good one throughout. Touch ’n Go eWallet covers the LRT, the monorail, convenience stores and a lot of hawker stalls, and it settles from a stored balance rather than over the network.

Kuala Lumpur’s transit is several systems stitched together, and the interchange walks between them are longer than the map suggests. That is what data actually solves on the ground.

Transfers between Kuala Lumpur lines can involve a substantial walk.

Coverage in the peninsular cities is ordinary populated-area coverage. Borneo is the part no network list can answer: Sabah and Sarawak are large, thinly populated in places, and knowing which technologies a network carries tells you nothing about geography. Download offline maps and your accommodation details before leaving Kota Kinabalu or Kuching.

Coverage information for Malaysia is given per network, not per region.

If you are choosing where to stay in KL, compare the exact map pin with the nearest LRT or MRT station on Booking.com. An address in the city centre can still be a twenty minute walk from a platform in the heat.

Keep your normal SIM for your phone number

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, your home SIM and Atli eSIM can have separate jobs: your own number stays on your home SIM for calls and texts, and mobile data in Malaysia comes from your Atli eSIM.

On a dual-SIM phone, set Atli as the cellular-data line and keep your primary SIM active for calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on your primary SIM to avoid unintended roaming data charges. If your carrier supports roaming, verification texts can still arrive on your primary SIM.

Read the dual-SIM travel guide for the settings to check before departure.

Malaysia-only plan or Southeast Asia regional plan?

This is the one decision on this page worth doing arithmetic for, because the answer flips at the top of the range:

PlanMalaysia onlySoutheast Asia
1 GB / 7 days$3.99$5.99
3 GB / 30 days$6.99$11.99
5 GB / 30 days$9.99$15.99
10 GB / 30 days$16.99$20.99
20 GB / 30 days$30.99$28.99

Up to 10 GB the local plan is cheaper, and by a wide margin at the small sizes. At 20 GB it is not. The regional plan costs two dollars less and covers eight countries instead of one: Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

So if you were going to buy 20 GB for Malaysia alone, buy the regional plan instead. It is cheaper and it does more.

That list also covers the two borders people actually cross from Malaysia. Singapore is on it, which matters if you are taking the causeway from Johor Bahru, and so is Thailand, which matters on the overland route north.

See the regional eSIM guide if your itinerary crosses several countries.

Travel eSIM or local Malaysian SIM?

Malaysia requires registration before a locally issued prepaid SIM can be used, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission oversees the rules. Buying a local prepaid SIM therefore means presenting identity documents at the point of sale.

Atli is a travel eSIM delivered digitally rather than a Malaysian prepaid SIM, so it is not part of that process. It also does not give you a Malaysian number.

A local product may still suit a longer stay, heavy data use or anyone who needs a Malaysian number. CelcomDigi sells prepaid service directly, as do Maxis and U Mobile. Those are separate local products rather than services supplied by Atli, so check the current offer and what registration involves before buying.

How to set up an Atli eSIM for Malaysia

Install the eSIM at home before you travel, while you still have reliable WiFi. Do not wait until you arrive: airport WiFi may be slow, require a login or fail when you need it. Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.

Installing the eSIM does not start the plan. It starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination. You have up to 30 days after purchase to make that first connection; after that, the plan starts automatically.

After arrival:

  1. Turn on the Atli eSIM.
  2. Select Atli as the cellular-data line.
  3. Turn on data roaming for that line.
  4. Leave your home SIM off for mobile data if you want to avoid home-carrier roaming charges.

Keep the Atli eSIM installed after the data plan expires. You need only this one eSIM profile: if you buy another plan later, it is added to the same eSIM automatically. There is nothing new to install. Data plans expire; the eSIM itself stays on your phone. Do not delete its profile.

FAQ

Does Atli work in Malaysia?
Yes. Atli provides data service through CelcomDigi, still listed under its pre-merger name Celcom Axiata Berhad. It carries LTE and 5G, and no 2G or 3G.
Does Atli use Maxis?
No. Maxis is not an Atli partner network. CelcomDigi is the only Malaysian network listed.
Should I buy the Malaysia plan or the Southeast Asia one?
Below 20 GB the Malaysia plan is cheaper. At 20 GB for 30 days the regional plan costs $28.99 against $30.99, so it is both cheaper and valid in eight countries. Buy the regional one at that size.
Does Atli include a Malaysian phone number?
No. Atli is data-only and does not include a Malaysian number, SMS or cellular voice calls. Internet-based calling and messaging apps work over the data connection.
Can I keep my normal phone number?
Yes, on a compatible dual-SIM phone. Keep your normal SIM active for your number and select Atli for cellular data. Charges from your home carrier may still apply.
Does Atli get 5G in Malaysia?
CelcomDigi carries 5G. The connection you actually get depends on the phone, the location and the local signal, with LTE as the normal fallback.
Will a Malaysia plan work in Singapore or Thailand?
No. Both are on Atli’s Southeast Asia regional plan, so choose that before the trip if you are crossing the causeway or heading north overland.
Can I use my phone as a hotspot?
Yes. Atli supports personal hotspot. Connected devices use data from the same plan.
Can I receive bank verification codes?
Atli cannot receive SMS. Codes can still arrive on your home SIM if that line remains active and your carrier supports SMS roaming in Malaysia.
Do I need a new eSIM when I buy another plan?
No. Keep the original Atli eSIM installed. A later plan is added to that same eSIM automatically, so you only need to turn it on and select it for data at the destination.
