eSIM for Laos in 2026: which plan do you need?

The Laos-China Railway has transformed travel between Vientiane, Vang Vieng, and Luang Prabang, but buying tickets and checking seat assignments requires the official LCR app. Outside the train stations, finding guesthouses down unpaved side alleys still relies on having a map handy.

Atli is data-only. It does not provide a Lao phone number, SMS or cellular voice calls. Maps, WhatsApp, the railway booking app and translation apps all work through the data connection.

One comparison decides most of this. The same $48.99 buys either 10 GB valid for thirty days or unlimited data valid for seven. Unless you are working from Luang Prabang and moving large files, the fixed plan is much better value, and 3 GB for $16.99 covers about a week of maps, messaging and booking.

Per day, unlimited barely changes, from $7.40 at five days to $6.53 at thirty. Each extra five days past a fortnight adds about thirty-two dollars.

Why there is no regional option

Atli sells two Asian bundles and a global plan. Laos is on none of them.

This matters for route planning. The classic way into Luang Prabang is the two-day slow boat from Huay Xai on the Thai border, and the classic way out is the train or a flight to Hanoi or Bangkok. Every one of those routes crosses between Laos and a country on a different plan, so a Laos leg always needs its own plan alongside whatever covers the rest of the trip.

How Laos compares on price

Laos sits near the top of the range for mainland Southeast Asia:

Only Myanmar costs more, and that is a country our own guide advises against visiting. Among the countries on common routes, Laos costs the most.

The amounts are still small, but on a multi-country budget the Laos leg will cost more than the rest.

What network Atli uses in Laos

Atli has one Lao partner network: ETL on 2G, 3G and LTE.

There is no 5G. Atli’s networks in Cambodia and Vietnam also stop at LTE, while Thailand and the Philippines carry 5G. LTE is enough for maps, messaging and bookings.

Unitel, Lao Telecom and TPlus are the country’s other operators and none is among Atli’s partner networks. Your phone will attach to ETL.

A network list is not a coverage map. Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and the railway corridor are well served. The Mekong between Huay Xai and Pakbeng is not, and neither are the mountain roads or most of the trekking around Nong Khiaw. Two full days on the slow boat means two days largely without signal, so download offline maps, the ticket and anything you want to read before you board.

Where the data goes

The Laos-China Railway is the main one. Vientiane to Luang Prabang takes about 1 hour 50 minutes for 330,000 kip in second class, about $15, and trains sell out, so booking a day or two ahead through the LCR app is the normal move. The app needs a connection, so it helps to arrive with data already working.

After that it is the ordinary things: maps in a town with few street signs, messaging a guesthouse, checking the weather before an afternoon at Kuang Si. Our Luang Prabang guide covers the falls, the alms round and the getting-there decision in detail.

Cash still does most of the work on the ground. Kip in small notes, and do not count on a card outside the bigger hotels.

Keep your normal SIM for your phone number

Atli supplies data. Your own SIM keeps supplying your number: mobile data comes from the Atli eSIM, and your own number stays on your home SIM for calls and texts.

On a dual-SIM phone, set Atli as the cellular-data line and keep your primary SIM active for calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on your primary SIM to avoid unintended roaming data charges. If your carrier supports roaming, verification texts can still arrive on your primary SIM.

Travel eSIM or a local Lao SIM?

Local prepaid SIMs are cheap in Laos, sold at the airports and in town, and come with a Lao number. They are bought in person and registered.

Because the Laos plan costs more, a local SIM is a closer competitor here than in Thailand or Vietnam. The trade is the usual one: an Atli plan already works when you arrive, needs no queue and no passport at a counter, and keeps your existing number reachable. A local SIM is cheaper for a long stay and gives you a Lao number for calling guesthouses. For a week or two, the eSIM is easier. For a month of overland travel, price the local option properly.

How to set up an Atli eSIM for Laos

1. Check the phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.

3. On arrival, select the Atli line for cellular data and turn on data roaming for that line.
4. Leave the home SIM off for mobile data to avoid home-carrier charges.
