Mobile data in Italy earns its keep at platform changes, museum entrances and the last few turns to a hotel. The rest of the trip can survive without a signal. Atli’s Italy eSIM starts at $3.99 and lists Iliad, Telecom Italia and Wind Italy as partner networks.
Atli provides mobile data only. It does not include an Italian phone number, SMS or cellular calls. Your home SIM can keep its usual number, while WhatsApp, Telegram, maps and train apps use the Atli connection.
Atli eSIM prices for Italy
| Data | Validity | Price | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | $3.99 | A weekend with light maps and messaging |
| 3 GB | 30 days | $5.99 | A short city break |
| 5 GB | 30 days | $8.99 | A normal holiday with daily navigation |
| 10 GB | 30 days | $15.99 | A longer trip and regular photo uploads |
| 20 GB | 30 days | $19.99 | Work, streaming or frequent hotspot use |
| Unlimited | 5 days | $14.99 | A short trip with heavy data use |
| Unlimited | 7 days | $19.99 | A data-heavy week |
| Unlimited | 10 days | $29.99 | Heavy use over a longer trip |
| Unlimited | 15 days | $37.99 | Two weeks without tracking each gigabyte |
| Unlimited | 30 days | $58.99 | A month of heavy use |
Unlimited plans also come in 20-day and 25-day versions. These prices were checked on September 1, 2026. Check the offer displayed in WhatsApp or Telegram before payment because prices can change.
The fixed-price ladder is unusual at the top. Ten gigabytes costs $15.99 and 20 GB costs $19.99. Anyone already leaning toward 10 GB should consider whether twice the data is worth another $4.

Iliad, TIM and WINDTRE coverage
Atli uses Iliad, Telecom Italia and Wind Italy, with LTE and 5G access. Telecom Italia is TIM. Wind Italy is the older name for the network now sold under the WINDTRE brand.
These are supported partners, not three buttons the phone cycles through whenever a bar disappears. The available network depends on the roaming profile and location. Manual selection can help in some troubleshooting cases, but it does not create permission to use a network the profile does not allow.
TIM and WINDTRE both publish separate 4G and 5G coverage information. WINDTRE’s coverage map can be searched by address or municipality. The percentages on operator sites refer to their retail networks and population coverage. They do not guarantee a particular roaming speed inside a hotel, train tunnel or mountain valley.
Cities and populated corridors have the broadest coverage. In the Dolomites, rural Sicily and parts of Sardinia, download the route before leaving town. Stone walls also do a fine job of turning a strong outdoor signal into a weak indoor one.
Italy’s regional train ticket lives on the phone
Trenitalia’s Digital Regional Ticket can be bought through its website or app. It validates automatically at the scheduled departure time for the selected train, and the ticket shown during inspection carries a dynamic green bar.
That makes live data useful when plans change. The ticket time can be changed within Trenitalia’s stated limits, and the app carries train updates. Load the ticket before boarding anyway. A tunnel is a poor place to discover that the page never finished opening.
For Venice, keep a city map offline and use live data for vaporetto times. For Cinque Terre, check train and trail information before leaving the accommodation. In the Dolomites, save the refuge details and return route before the cable car goes up.

How much data do you need in Italy?
One to 3 GB can cover a short city break with careful use. Five to 10 GB suits one or two weeks of maps, train apps, restaurant searches, messages and some photo uploads. Twenty gigabytes makes sense when the phone will stream or supply a laptop.
Download shows and music on WiFi before a long train ride. Tunnels interrupt the signal, and streaming is usually the largest avoidable use of travel data. Automatic photo backup is close behind.
Hotspot use draws from the same allowance. The travel data-saver guide explains how to restrict updates and background jobs.
Italy-only or Europe regional plan?
Atli’s Europe plan covers 34 countries, including Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia and the United Kingdom.
| Allowance | Italy plan | Europe plan |
|---|---|---|
| 5 GB / 30 days | $8.99 | $18.99 |
| 10 GB / 30 days | $15.99 | $32.99 |
| 20 GB / 30 days | $19.99 | $36.99 |
| Unlimited / 10 days | $29.99 | $26.99 |
Italy-only is cheaper at every fixed allowance. Unlimited pricing is less tidy. Seven and 15 days cost the same locally and regionally. The 10-day Europe plan saves $3, and the 20-day version saves $1. At five, 25 and 30 days, Italy-only is cheaper.
Check the exact duration rather than assuming a local plan always wins. The regional eSIM guide explains how the allowance works after a border crossing.
Travel eSIM or local Italian prepaid SIM?
Atli suits a visitor who wants data ready before arrival and does not need an Italian number. A local prepaid SIM may suit a long stay or someone who needs a local number for ordinary calls and SMS.
Buying locally adds a shop or kiosk stop to the first day. For a long stay, that may be fine. For four nights split between Rome and Florence, it is mostly another queue. See eSIM vs airport SIM vs pocket WiFi for the broader comparison.
Set up the eSIM before the trip
Install the first Atli eSIM at home while reliable WiFi is available. Before paying, confirm that the phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
Installing the eSIM does not start the plan. It starts when the phone first connects at the destination. You have up to 30 days after purchase to make that connection; after that, the plan starts automatically.
After arrival:
- Turn on the Atli eSIM.
- Select Atli as the cellular-data line.
- Turn on data roaming for that line.
- Stop the home SIM from using mobile data if you want to avoid home-carrier roaming charges.
Keep the profile installed after the plan expires. A later Italy plan or plan for another supported destination is added to the same Atli eSIM automatically. You do not install a second profile.
Keep your home SIM for your number
On a compatible dual-SIM phone, the two lines can have separate jobs: your own number stays on your home SIM for calls and texts, and mobile data in Italy comes from your Atli eSIM.
On a dual-SIM phone, set Atli as the cellular-data line and keep your primary SIM active for calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on your primary SIM to avoid unintended roaming data charges. If your carrier supports roaming, verification texts can still arrive on your primary SIM.
WhatsApp and Telegram keep the number already registered in the app. The dual-SIM travel guide covers the settings to check before departure.
The map pin matters more than the town name
In Venice, the wrong side of a canal can add bridges and luggage to a short-looking walk. Around the Amalfi Coast, a property outside the centre may depend on a bus that stops running earlier than dinner. Check the exact pin and recent arrival notes on Booking.com before paying for a view that comes with an awkward route.
