eSIM for Iceland in 2026: prices, coverage and setup

On Iceland's Ring Road, an eSIM and offline maps belong together. Use mobile data for live road and weather updates, then let the downloads cover the gaps.

In Iceland, a data plan and an offline map are not substitutes for each other. You want both. Atli’s Iceland eSIM starts at $3.99 and lists Síminn and Nova as partner networks, but a network list does not promise continuous signal around the Ring Road or into the Highlands.

Atli provides mobile data only. It does not include an Icelandic phone number, SMS or cellular calls. Your home SIM can keep its usual number, while maps, weather pages, WhatsApp and Telegram use the Atli connection.

Unlimited plans also come in 20-day and 25-day versions. These prices were checked on September 1, 2026. The plan shown in WhatsApp or Telegram before payment is the final one to check.

The fixed plans are unusually inexpensive. Five gigabytes gives enough room for maps, road checks and ordinary holiday use without paying much more than 3 GB. A laptop or regular video calls can still make 20 GB or unlimited data sensible.

Síminn and Nova coverage

Atli uses Landsíminn, usually written Síminn, and Nova, with LTE and 5G access. The connection available to the phone depends on the roaming profile, local signal and device. It may not use both networks in every place.

Nova’s official coverage map shows 4G and 5G separately and says its network reaches more than 98% of Iceland’s population. That is a population figure. It is not a promise that 98% of the land, every mountain road or the full coastline has service.

Reykjavík and the larger towns are not the difficult part. Signal becomes less predictable between settlements, behind mountains and on roads that push inland. Save the accommodation address and the next fuel stop before leaving a connected area.

Road conditions matter more than the signal bars

SafeTravel Iceland carries official travel alerts and warns that weather and road conditions can change fast. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration publishes road notices, surface conditions and weather information through its Umferðin traffic service.

Check both while connected. A phone signal does not make a closed road open, and a green route line does not make the wind harmless. Before a long drive, keep these offline too:

  • the day’s route and fuel stops;
  • the accommodation address and booking reference;
  • any trail or parking instructions;
  • the emergency number, 112.

Do not turn this into a six-app ritual. One road check, one weather check and a saved route are more useful than a screen full of aurora forecasts while the actual road is closing.

How much data does an Iceland trip need?

One to 3 GB can cover a short trip when the phone is used for road checks, messages and occasional maps. Five to 10 GB suits a week or two with daily navigation, social media and music. Twenty gigabytes or unlimited data is for regular streaming, video calls or a laptop hotspot.

Download playlists before a Ring Road drive. The savings are useful, but the real benefit is that the music continues through a coverage gap. Do the same with the map.

Hotspot use draws from the same plan allowance. The travel data-saver guide explains how to stop cloud backup and updates from running over mobile data.

Iceland-only or Europe regional plan?

Atli’s Europe plan covers Iceland and 33 other countries, including the United Kingdom, Norway, France and Italy.

30-day allowanceIceland planEurope plan
5 GB$6.99$18.99
10 GB$10.99$32.99
20 GB$18.99$36.99

The local plan is cheaper at every fixed allowance, and Iceland’s unlimited plans are also cheaper at each duration. Choose Europe when the same trip continues elsewhere. A stop in London or Oslo is a reason. A flight connection where the phone stays in airplane mode is not.

See the regional eSIM guide for how one allowance works across several countries.

Travel eSIM or local Icelandic prepaid SIM?

Atli suits a visitor who wants data arranged before arrival and does not need an Icelandic number. A local prepaid SIM may suit a long stay or someone who needs a local number for ordinary calls and SMS.

The eSIM saves an errand after you arrive. The local option can still be reasonable for a longer stay, especially if its current retail package fits better. Compare the actual allowance and validity rather than the logo. The guide to eSIM vs airport SIM vs pocket WiFi covers the practical differences.

Install before you fly

Install the first Atli eSIM at home while reliable WiFi is available. Check that the phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked before paying.

Installing the eSIM does not start the plan. It starts when the phone first connects at the destination. You have up to 30 days after purchase to make that connection; after that, the plan starts automatically.

After arrival:

  1. Turn on the Atli eSIM.
  2. Select Atli as the cellular-data line.
  3. Turn on data roaming for that line.
  4. Stop the home SIM from using mobile data if you want to avoid home-carrier roaming charges.

Keep the Atli profile when the data plan expires. Another plan is added to that same eSIM automatically. There is no new QR code to install for the next trip.

Keep your home SIM for your number

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, the two lines can do separate jobs: your own number stays on your home SIM for calls and texts, and mobile data in Iceland comes from your Atli eSIM.

On a dual-SIM phone, set Atli as the cellular-data line and keep your primary SIM active for calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on your primary SIM to avoid unintended roaming data charges. If your carrier supports roaming, verification texts can still arrive on your primary SIM.

WhatsApp and Telegram keep their registered number and work over Atli data. Read the dual-SIM travel guide for the settings to check.

Book the night before drawing the route

A cottage outside Vík or a guesthouse in the Westfjords may look close to the day’s last stop until the road is traced properly. Check the exact pin and recent arrival instructions on Booking.com, then build the drive around the place you are actually sleeping.

FAQ

Does Atli work in Iceland?
Yes. Atli connects through Síminn and Nova, with LTE and 5G access. The connection depends on the location, device and roaming profile.
What is the best Atli eSIM plan for Iceland?
Five gigabytes at $6.99 suits many road trips. Ten gigabytes at $10.99 gives more room for photo uploads, music and a longer stay.
Will Atli work around the entire Ring Road?
Do not assume continuous service. Coverage is strongest around populated areas and can drop between settlements or behind terrain. Download the route before driving.
Does Atli include an Icelandic phone number?
No. Atli is data-only and does not provide a phone number, SMS or cellular voice calls.
Can I keep my normal phone number in Iceland?
Yes, on a compatible dual-SIM phone. Keep the home SIM active for its number and select Atli for mobile data. Home-carrier roaming charges may still apply.
Will an Iceland plan work in Norway or the UK?
No. The local plan covers Iceland. Choose the Europe regional plan if the same allowance needs to work in another covered country.
Can I use my phone as a hotspot?
Yes. Connected devices use data from the same plan allowance.
Do I need a new Atli eSIM for another trip?
No. Keep the original profile installed. A later plan is added to that same eSIM automatically.
