Hong Kong’s MTR stations are vast underground labyrinths with up to twenty exits per complex. Knowing whether exit A or exit G leads to your street can save a long detour through subterranean tunnels, and checking digital Octopus balances on the move keeps transit simple.
Atli is data-only. It does not provide a Hong Kong phone number, SMS or cellular voice calls. WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage, FaceTime, maps and transport apps work through the data connection.

Hong Kong is small and densely built, and WiFi is common in hotels, malls and cafes, so a city trip here often uses less mobile data than the same number of days elsewhere. Three gigabytes covers most long weekends built around maps, train times and messaging. Choose 5 GB if you upload photos and video regularly, and 20 GB or unlimited if you plan to tether a laptop.

What network Atli uses in Hong Kong
Atli uses one Hong Kong network: 3 Hong Kong (Hutchison) on 3G, LTE and 5G.
This is worth knowing before you buy. In markets like Germany or the Netherlands there is more than one partner network, so a phone has somewhere else to go when one is congested. In Hong Kong there is a single partner network, and no second carrier for the eSIM to fall back on.
Coverage across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories is dense, and 5G is listed rather than promised for every location. Your phone connects to 5G where the device, the local signal and the plan allow it, with LTE as the normal fallback. No guide can tell you what the signal does in a specific tunnel section, lift lobby or hillside on Lantau. Save your hotel address and any tickets offline before a long hike or a ferry to the outlying islands.

Mobile data on the MTR and around town
The MTR Mobile app covers train times, station layouts and exit numbers. Exits matter more here than route planning does: stations are large, exits are numbered, and choosing the wrong one can put you several streets from where you meant to be.

Octopus is the card most visitors use for transit, convenience stores and small purchases. Octopus explains the options for visitors, including adding a card to a phone. It settles from a stored balance rather than over the network, so a weak signal does not stop you getting through a gate.
Keep tickets and booking details available offline. Mobile data is useful for changes during the day, but you should not need a signal to show something you already received.
If you are choosing where to stay, compare the exact map pin with the nearest MTR station on Booking.com. A room in Kowloon or on the Island can be equally convenient when the station is close and the line is direct.
Keep your normal SIM for your phone number
On a compatible dual-SIM phone, your home SIM and Atli eSIM can have separate jobs: your own number stays on your home SIM for calls and texts, and mobile data in Hong Kong comes from your Atli eSIM.
On a dual-SIM phone, set Atli as the cellular-data line and keep your primary SIM active for calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on your primary SIM to avoid unintended roaming data charges. If your carrier supports roaming, verification texts can still arrive on your primary SIM.
Read the dual-SIM travel guide for the settings to check before departure.
Hong Kong-only plan or Asia regional plan?
A local Hong Kong plan is the cheaper choice when the whole trip stays in the territory. It stops working at the boundary.
Atli’s Asia regional plan covers 10 places, including Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. At current prices, 3 GB for 30 days costs $8.99 on the regional plan against $6.99 for Hong Kong alone. That two dollar gap is small, so the regional plan is usually the better buy if a Macau ferry or a day across the boundary in Shenzhen is anywhere in the itinerary.
Macau also has its own local plan, priced the same as Hong Kong’s, which is worth comparing if Macau is the only other stop.
See the regional eSIM guide if your itinerary covers several countries.
Travel eSIM or local Hong Kong SIM?
Hong Kong requires real-name registration before a locally issued SIM card can be activated. The Office of the Communications Authority explains the programme, which has applied to new subscriptions since 1 March 2022. Buying a local prepaid SIM therefore means registering identity details with the operator before the data works.
Atli is a travel eSIM delivered digitally rather than a locally issued Hong Kong SIM, so it is not part of that programme. It also does not give you a Hong Kong number.
A local SIM or eSIM may still suit a longer stay, heavy data use or anyone who needs a local number. Check the operator’s current offer and registration process before buying.

How to set up an Atli eSIM for Hong Kong
Install the eSIM at home before you travel, while you still have reliable WiFi. Do not wait until you arrive: airport WiFi may be slow, require a login or fail when you need it. Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
Installing the eSIM does not start the plan. It starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination. You have up to 30 days after purchase to make that first connection; after that, the plan starts automatically.
After arrival:
- Turn on the Atli eSIM.
- Select Atli as the cellular-data line.
- Turn on data roaming for that line.
- Leave your home SIM off for mobile data if you want to avoid home-carrier roaming charges.
Keep the Atli eSIM installed after the data plan expires. You need only this one eSIM profile: if you buy another plan later, it is added to the same eSIM automatically. There is nothing new to install. Data plans expire; the eSIM itself stays on your phone. Do not delete its profile.
