eSIM for France in 2026: prices, networks and setup

France is the easy part; the question is whether your trip stays there. Atli uses Orange and Free Mobile, plus a 34-country Europe plan for wider routes.

France has a habit of putting the day’s useful information on a screen. A Louvre time slot, a late TGV, the last train back from Versailles and the address of a village hotel all become phone jobs. Atli’s France eSIM starts at $3.99 and lists Orange France and Free Mobile as partner networks.

Atli provides mobile data only. It does not include a French phone number, SMS or cellular calls. Your home SIM can keep its usual number, while WhatsApp, Telegram, maps and rail apps use the Atli connection.

Five gigabytes is enough for many trips built around maps, messages, ticket apps and occasional social use. Video changes the calculation. So does using the phone as a hotspot when the accommodation WiFi is poor.

Orange and Free Mobile coverage

Atli uses Orange France and Free Mobile, with LTE and 5G access. The available connection depends on the roaming profile, phone and local signal. Two partner networks do not mean the phone will always switch to whichever one looks stronger.

Both operators publish coverage information. Orange’s mobile coverage map separates mobile internet from voice and SMS, while Free publishes its current 5G coverage. These maps describe the operators’ networks. They do not guarantee that a roaming eSIM will attach to every listed band or produce the same speed as a local subscriber.

Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nice and other large cities are the easy part. Reception can still drop inside stone buildings, deep stations and tunnels. Rural roads, Alpine valleys and parts of Corsica deserve offline maps before departure.

Train tickets need a little preparation

The SNCF Connect app sells and stores tickets for TGV INOUI, OUIGO, TER and several connecting services. Mobile data helps with delays, platform information and a changed connection. It does not guarantee signal through every tunnel or rural stretch.

Load the ticket before walking onto the platform. If the app allows the ticket to be added to the phone wallet, do that too. A saved hotel address and offline city map are also useful when the train arrives late and the station WiFi is no help.

For a Provence or Normandy road trip, download the route before leaving the city. Mobile data remains useful for closures, parking and opening hours, but it should not hold the only copy of the day’s directions.

How much data do you need in France?

One to 3 GB can cover a short city break with careful use. Five to 10 GB suits one or two weeks of maps, rail apps, restaurant searches, messages and some photo uploads. Twenty gigabytes or unlimited data is easier when the phone will feed a laptop or carry the trip’s entertainment.

Automatic photo backup is a common waste. Pause it until WiFi, along with large app updates. Hotspot use comes from the same allowance as the phone, so a laptop update can turn a small plan into a very short plan.

France-only or Europe regional plan?

Atli’s Europe plan covers 34 countries, including France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and the United Kingdom.

30-day allowanceFrance planEurope plan
5 GB$7.99$18.99
10 GB$12.99$32.99
20 GB$22.99$36.99

France-only is cheaper at every fixed allowance. The regional plan earns its price when the route continues elsewhere. A train from Paris to London, Brussels, Geneva or Barcelona is a real reason to buy it; a vague chance of crossing a border is not.

The local unlimited plans are also cheaper at each duration. Read the regional eSIM guide before paying extra for coverage you may not use.

Travel eSIM or local French prepaid SIM?

Atli suits a visitor who wants data installed before arrival and does not need a French number. A local prepaid SIM may suit a long stay or someone who needs a local number for ordinary calls and SMS.

A local product means choosing and setting it up after arrival. That can be reasonable for a month in one place. It is less attractive when the first afternoon already has a timed ticket and a train connection. See eSIM vs airport SIM vs pocket WiFi for the wider comparison.

Set up the eSIM before the flight

Install the first Atli eSIM at home while reliable WiFi is available. Check first that the phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.

Installing the eSIM does not start the data plan. It starts when the phone first connects at the destination. You have up to 30 days after purchase to make that connection; after that, the plan starts automatically.

After arrival:

  1. Turn on the Atli eSIM.
  2. Select Atli as the cellular-data line.
  3. Turn on data roaming for that line.
  4. Stop the home SIM from using mobile data if you want to avoid home-carrier roaming charges.

Keep the Atli eSIM installed when the plan expires. You need only one profile. A later France plan, regional plan or plan for another supported destination is added to that same eSIM automatically.

Keep your home SIM for your number

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, the two lines can have separate jobs: your own number stays on your home SIM for calls and texts, and mobile data in France comes from your Atli eSIM.

On a dual-SIM phone, set Atli as the cellular-data line and keep your primary SIM active for calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on your primary SIM to avoid unintended roaming data charges. If your carrier supports roaming, verification texts can still arrive on your primary SIM.

WhatsApp and Telegram keep the number already registered in the app. Read the dual-SIM travel guide before changing the phone settings.

Where the hotel pin matters

In Paris, a cheap room beyond the périphérique can add two transfers to every day. In Provence, a village address that looks nearby may sit on the other side of a slow road. Compare the exact property pin with the station, parking and first morning’s route on Booking.com before deciding that two hotels are equally convenient.

FAQ

Does Atli work in France?
Yes. Atli connects through Orange France and Free Mobile, with LTE and 5G access. The connection available to the phone depends on the location, device and roaming profile.
What is the best Atli eSIM plan for France?
Five gigabytes at $7.99 suits many holidays. Ten gigabytes at $12.99 gives more room for two weeks of navigation, social media and internet calls.
Does Atli include a French phone number?
No. Atli is data-only and does not provide a phone number, SMS or cellular voice calls.
Can I keep my normal phone number in France?
Yes, on a compatible dual-SIM phone. Keep the home SIM active for its number and select Atli for mobile data. Home-carrier roaming charges may still apply.
Will the France plan work in Spain, Italy or Switzerland?
No. The local plan covers France. Choose the Europe regional plan if the same allowance needs to work across those borders.
Will I have mobile data throughout a TGV journey?
Do not assume an uninterrupted connection. Reception can drop in tunnels and rural sections, so load the ticket and essential route information before boarding.
Can I use my phone as a hotspot?
Yes. Connected devices use data from the same plan allowance.
Do I need a new Atli eSIM for another trip?
No. Keep the original profile installed. A later plan is added to that same eSIM automatically.
