eSIM for Croatia in 2026: plans, 5G and setup

Atli works on A1 and Telemach in Croatia, but the Europe plan stops at some nearby borders. A Montenegro or Bosnia day trip needs its own data plan.

Island travel along the Dalmatian coast runs on catamaran timetables. Between Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik, Jadrolinija and Krilo adjust schedules for weather, and buying ferry tickets online is far simpler than queueing at harbor ticket booths in July.

Atli is data-only. It does not provide a Croatian phone number, SMS or cellular voice calls. WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage, FaceTime, maps and ferry apps work through the data connection.

These prices were checked in August 2026. Plans and prices can change.

Three gigabytes covers about a week of maps, ferry timetables and messaging. Choose 5 GB if you post photos from the islands most days, and 20 GB or unlimited if you will tether a laptop from an apartment.

What networks Atli uses in Croatia

Atli uses two Croatian networks, both listed under names the operators no longer trade as: VIPnet, now A1 Hrvatska, and Tele2 Croatia, now Telemach Hrvatska. Both carry 2G, 3G, LTE and 5G.

Vipnet was renamed A1 in October 2018 when Telekom Austria unified its brands, and Tele2 Croatia became Telemach in 2020 after joining United Group. The networks are the same; only the names changed. Hrvatski Telekom is not one of Atli’s partner networks.

Two networks is worth having on this coast. When one is busy in a port town in August, the phone has somewhere else to go. Both are listed with 5G, so 5G is possible rather than guaranteed, and LTE is the normal fallback.

Ferries, islands and the coast road

Jadrolinija and Krilo run the catamarans and car ferries between Split, Hvar, Korčula, Brač and Dubrovnik. Book and download your tickets before you sail rather than at the gate.

A network list covers technologies, not geography, and says nothing about coverage at sea. Do not count on a signal mid-crossing. Save your onward booking, your accommodation address and an offline map before you board.

The same applies inland. Reception in the gorges at Plitvice, or on a boat between islands, is not something any operator can tell you in advance. Towns and the Jadranska magistrala coastal road are ordinary populated coverage areas; the water and the canyons are not.

If you are choosing between Split and Dubrovnik as a base, compare the exact map pin with the ferry port on Booking.com. Old town addresses look close on a map and can still mean a long walk with a suitcase over stone stairs.

Keep your normal SIM for your phone number

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, your home SIM and Atli eSIM can have separate jobs: your own number stays on your home SIM for calls and texts, and mobile data in Croatia comes from your Atli eSIM.

On a dual-SIM phone, set Atli as the cellular-data line and keep your primary SIM active for calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on your primary SIM to avoid unintended roaming data charges. If your carrier supports roaming, verification texts can still arrive on your primary SIM.

Read the dual-SIM travel guide for the settings to check before departure.

Croatia-only plan or Europe regional plan?

A local Croatia plan is much the cheaper choice when the trip stays in the country. At current prices, 3 GB for 30 days costs $4.99 for Croatia against $11.99 on the Europe regional plan.

Atli’s Europe regional plan covers 34 countries and includes Croatia, Italy and Slovenia, so it earns its price on an itinerary that crosses into those.

It does not include Montenegro or Bosnia and Herzegovina. Both have their own Atli local plans instead, starting at $3.99 for 1 GB over 7 days. This matters more than it sounds. A day trip to Kotor from Dubrovnik, or to Mostar from Split or Dubrovnik, are two of the most common excursions on this coast, and neither the Croatia plan nor the Europe regional plan covers either country.

Neither the Croatia plan nor the Europe plan covers Montenegro.

See the regional eSIM guide if your itinerary crosses several countries.

Travel eSIM or local Croatian SIM?

A travel eSIM is convenient when you want data arranged before arrival. A local product may suit a longer stay, heavy data use or anyone who needs a Croatian number.

A1 Hrvatska and Telemach Hrvatska both sell prepaid mobile service directly. Those are separate local products rather than services supplied by Atli, and their terms change, so check the current offer and any registration requirement before buying.

How to set up an Atli eSIM for Croatia

Install the eSIM at home before you travel, while you still have reliable WiFi. Do not wait until you arrive: airport WiFi may be slow, require a login or fail when you need it. Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.

Installing the eSIM does not start the plan. It starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination. You have up to 30 days after purchase to make that first connection; after that, the plan starts automatically.

After arrival:

  1. Turn on the Atli eSIM.
  2. Select Atli as the cellular-data line.
  3. Turn on data roaming for that line.
  4. Leave your home SIM off for mobile data if you want to avoid home-carrier roaming charges.

Keep the Atli eSIM installed after the data plan expires. You need only this one eSIM profile: if you buy another plan later, it is added to the same eSIM automatically. There is nothing new to install. Data plans expire; the eSIM itself stays on your phone. Do not delete its profile.

FAQ

Does Atli work in Croatia?
Yes. Atli provides data service through two Croatian networks, still listed under their old names VIPnet and Tele2 Croatia and trading today as A1 Hrvatska and Telemach. Both are listed with 2G, 3G, LTE and 5G.
Does Atli include a Croatian phone number?
No. Atli is data-only and does not include a Croatian number, SMS or cellular voice calls. Internet-based calling and messaging apps work over the data connection.
Can I keep my normal phone number?
Yes, on a compatible dual-SIM phone. Keep your normal SIM active for your number and select Atli for cellular data. Charges from your home carrier may still apply.
Does Atli get 5G in Croatia?
Both Croatian networks carry 5G. The connection you actually get depends on the phone, the location and the local signal, with LTE as the normal fallback.
Will a Croatia plan work in Montenegro or Bosnia and Herzegovina?
No, and the Europe regional plan does not cover them either. Neither country is among its 34. Both have their own Atli local plans, starting at $3.99 for 1 GB over 7 days. Arrange one before a Kotor or Mostar day trip.
Will a Croatia plan work in Italy or Slovenia?
Not on its own. Both are on Atli’s Europe regional plan, so choose that before the trip if your route crosses either border.
Will I have a signal on the ferry between islands?
Do not assume so. A network list describes technologies, not coverage at sea, and no operator promises a signal mid-crossing. Download tickets and directions before you board.
Can I use my phone as a hotspot?
Yes. Atli supports personal hotspot. Connected devices use data from the same plan.
Can I receive bank verification codes?
Atli cannot receive SMS. Codes can still arrive on your home SIM if that line remains active and your carrier supports SMS roaming in Croatia.
Do I need a new eSIM when I buy another plan?
No. Keep the original Atli eSIM installed. A later plan is added to that same eSIM automatically, so you only need to turn it on and select it for data at the destination.
