eSIM for Australia in 2026: plans, Optus and setup

Atli runs on Optus in Australia, so the main decision is how much data to buy before you arrive. Keep your home SIM active for calls and texts.

For most Australia trips, 5 GB or 10 GB is enough for maps, transit, messages and ordinary holiday use. Atli’s Australia plans start at $3.99, connect through Optus and include hotspot use. Install the eSIM before flying. Australia is a poor place to discover that you still need WiFi after you arrive, especially if the first part of the trip involves a rental car.

Atli supplies mobile data only. It does not come with an Australian phone number, SMS or cellular calls. Your usual SIM can stay in the phone for those, while WhatsApp, Telegram, maps and transport apps use the Atli connection.

There are also unlimited options for 7, 20 and 25 days. The plan shown in WhatsApp or Telegram before payment is the final one to check, particularly if your dates or the prices have moved since you first looked.

The smaller fixed plans are good value here. Five gigabytes costs only $2 more than 3 GB, and 10 GB costs $7 more than 5 GB. The jump to 20 GB is harder to justify unless you will stream, work from a laptop or share a hotspot with someone else.

Which network does Atli use in Australia?

Atli uses Optus, with LTE and 5G access. A compatible phone may use 5G where it is available, then fall back to 4G elsewhere. The network, phone, congestion and terrain all affect the actual connection.

Optus says its 4G network reaches 98.5% of Australia’s population. That figure is about people, not land. It should not be read as 98.5% of the country having signal. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth are straightforward. Long coastal drives, mountain roads and the interior need more planning.

Check the official Optus coverage map for specific addresses and routes. Coverage maps are predictions rather than guarantees, but they are more useful than a broad claim that a road or national park is covered.

Download an offline map before driving beyond the cities. On the Great Ocean Road, for example, mobile data is useful for weather, fuel and changed access, but it should not be the only copy of the route. The same applies more strongly in the Outback.

How much data do you need?

The phone uses little data for the things Australia makes awkward without it: finding the right Sydney ferry wharf, checking a Melbourne tram, paying for parking or locating the next open petrol station. Video is what changes the plan size.

A weekend or short city break can fit inside 1 to 3 GB. For one or two weeks, 5 to 10 GB gives room for daily navigation, social media and internet calls. Twenty gigabytes or unlimited data makes more sense when a laptop, streaming or another person’s device will share the connection.

Automatic photo backup can quietly use more data than the map. Set backups and large app updates to WiFi before the trip. The guide to using less mobile data while travelling covers the relevant iPhone and Android settings.

Hotspot traffic comes from the same allowance. There is no separate pool for a laptop. If the accommodation WiFi turns out to be slow, a 5 GB plan can disappear quickly during a work call or system update.

Australia-only or regional plan?

Atli’s Southeast Asia and Oceania plan covers Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

For an Australia-only trip, the local plan costs less at 1 GB, 3 GB, 5 GB and 10 GB. At 20 GB, both plans cost $28.99 for 30 days. That makes the regional plan the obvious choice at that allowance if another covered country is even a possibility.

30-day allowanceAustralia planRegional plan
5 GB$8.99$15.99
10 GB$15.99$20.99
20 GB$28.99$28.99

Unlimited regional plans cost more than the matching Australia options. Choose one only when the multi-country coverage is useful. The regional eSIM guide explains when a single regional allowance is better than buying countries separately.

Travel eSIM or local Australian prepaid SIM?

Atli suits a visitor who wants data ready before arrival and does not need an Australian number. A local prepaid SIM may make more sense for a long stay, or when a local number is needed for ordinary calls and SMS.

A shop-bought SIM also takes time after arrival. That may be a fair trade for a long trip, but less appealing when the first job is finding a rental-car desk or reaching an accommodation host. See eSIM vs airport SIM vs pocket WiFi for the practical differences.

Install it before the flight

Buy the first Atli plan in WhatsApp or Telegram while you still have reliable WiFi. Installing the eSIM does not start the plan. It starts when the phone first connects at the destination. You have up to 30 days after purchase to make that first connection; after that, the plan starts automatically.

  1. Send Australia in the Atli chat and choose a plan.
  2. Pay in the conversation and follow the installation instructions that arrive there.
  3. Keep the Atli eSIM switched off until you need it.
  4. When you arrive, turn it on and select it for mobile data.
  5. Turn on data roaming for that line.

You install the Atli eSIM profile once. The data plan expires, but the profile does not. A later plan is added to the same eSIM automatically, so do not delete it when this trip ends.

Before buying, confirm that the phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Installation needs an internet connection. Doing it at home gives you time to deal with a locked phone or an unfamiliar settings screen.

Your home number and WhatsApp

Atli is data-only. It does not provide a phone number, cellular voice service or SMS.

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, the two lines have separate jobs: your own number stays on your home SIM for calls and texts, and mobile data in Australia comes from your Atli eSIM.

On a dual-SIM phone, set Atli as the cellular-data line and keep your primary SIM active for calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on your primary SIM to avoid unintended roaming data charges. If your carrier supports roaming, verification texts can still arrive on your primary SIM.

WhatsApp and Telegram continue to use the number already registered in the app. They work over the Atli data connection without changing that number.

A practical note on where to stay

Australia’s distances punish an inconvenient hotel more than most city maps suggest. In Sydney, check the walk to a train station or ferry wharf. In Melbourne, look at the tram route rather than the straight-line distance. If you are still comparing neighbourhoods, Booking.com is useful for checking the exact property location against the day’s transport plan.

In Melbourne the tram route says more than the straight-line distance.

FAQ

What is the best Atli eSIM plan for Australia?
The 5 GB plan at $8.99 suits most city breaks. Choose 10 GB at $15.99 for a longer trip with daily navigation, social media and video calls. Remote work and hotspot use may justify 20 GB or unlimited data.
Which network does Atli use in Australia?
Atli uses Optus, with LTE and 5G access. Actual coverage and speed depend on the location, phone, network conditions and terrain.
Will an Australia eSIM work in the Outback?
Do not assume it will. Australian networks cover the population far more densely than the land. Check the route on the Optus map and download offline maps before leaving populated areas.
Can I use hotspot with an Atli Australia eSIM?
Yes. The connected devices use data from the plan you bought. A laptop update, cloud sync or video meeting can consume the allowance quickly.
Does Atli include an Australian phone number?
No. Atli is data-only. It does not provide a phone number, SMS or cellular voice calls. Internet calling and messaging apps work over the data connection.
Can I keep my normal phone number in Australia?
Yes, on a compatible dual-SIM phone. Keep the home SIM active for its number and select Atli for mobile data. Home-carrier roaming charges may still apply.
Will the Australia plan work in New Zealand or Bali?
No. The local plan covers Australia. Choose the Southeast Asia and Oceania regional plan if the same allowance needs to work in another covered country.
Do I need a new Atli eSIM for another trip?
No. Keep the original profile installed. When you buy another plan, Atli adds it to the same eSIM automatically.
