Google Fi is a US mobile carrier with broad international service on two of its plans. Atli is a prepaid travel eSIM that works alongside the phone plan you already have. If you already pay for Google Fi Unlimited Premium, Fi is usually the simpler choice for a short trip. If you live outside the US, use another carrier or need data beyond Fi’s international-use window, Atli makes more sense.

The Google Fi plans that work abroad
Google Fi has four current plans. Their travel coverage is not the same.
| Google Fi plan, one line | Monthly price before taxes and fees | Data outside the US |
|---|---|---|
| Unlimited Essentials | $35 | No international service while travelling |
| Unlimited Standard | $50 | Included in Canada and Mexico only |
| Unlimited Premium | $65 | Included in more than 200 destinations |
| Flexible | $20 plus $10 per GB | $10 per GB in more than 200 destinations |
Unlimited Premium provides 100 GB of high-speed data per billing cycle in the US, but the international high-speed allowance is 50 GB. After the applicable threshold, speeds slow to 256 Kbps. It also includes 50 GB of hotspot data and unlimited international texts. Cellular calls made outside the US, Canada and Mexico generally cost $0.20 per minute.
Flexible charges the same $10 per GB at home and in its covered international destinations. For one line, Bill Protection stops the data charge at $60 in a billing cycle, making the maximum base plan and data charge $80 before taxes and other charges. Speeds slow to 256 Kbps after 15 GB unless the customer chooses to pay for additional full-speed data.
Unlimited Essentials has no service while travelling internationally. Unlimited Standard covers Canada and Mexico, but not other countries. Google allows an immediate switch from either unlimited plan to Premium; the bill reflects the prorated plan change.

How Atli is different
Atli is designed to provide prepaid travel data alongside your existing mobile line. Send a destination in WhatsApp or Telegram, choose a fixed-data or unlimited plan and pay in the conversation. The eSIM and installation instructions arrive in the same chat.
The first Atli eSIM stays on the phone. Data plans expire, but the eSIM profile does not. When you buy another plan for a later trip, it is added to that profile automatically. There is no second eSIM to install.
Atli is data-only. On a dual-SIM phone, you can keep your primary SIM active for calls and texts while Atli handles mobile data. Internet calls and messages through WhatsApp, Telegram, FaceTime and similar apps work over the Atli data connection. Any cellular calls or sent texts on your primary SIM remain subject to your carrier’s roaming rates.
Price comparison for a trip to Japan
Google Fi Premium and Atli are priced in different ways, so there is no honest single winner across every situation. Premium is a recurring phone plan. Atli is bought for one trip. Flexible is the closest Fi comparison because it charges by the gigabyte.
These prices were checked in US dollars on September 1, 2026.
| Data in Japan | Atli | Google Fi Flexible data charge |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | $4.99 for 7 days | $10 |
| 5 GB | $10.99 for 30 days | $50 |
| 10 GB | $16.99 for 30 days | $60 with Bill Protection |
| 20 GB | $24.99 for 30 days | $60, with speeds slowed after 15 GB |
The Fi amounts above are data charges. A one-line Flexible account also has its $20 monthly base charge, plus applicable taxes and fees. Someone already paying that base charge should compare the extra data cost, not pretend the whole phone bill exists only because of the trip.
Atli is cheaper at every matched allowance in this example. The gap is $5.01 at 1 GB and $43.01 at 10 GB. At 20 GB, Fi Flexible has already passed its 15 GB high-speed threshold. The customer can accept 256 Kbps or pay $10 per additional gigabyte to restore full speed.
For an existing Unlimited Premium customer, the comparison reverses. International data is already included in the $65 monthly plan, so buying Atli would be an extra expense unless the Fi allowance, coverage or roaming policy creates a problem. Someone on Unlimited Standard would compare an Atli plan with the cost and inconvenience of moving to Premium for the trip.
If you are unsure which allowance fits, the guide to how much data you need for a trip gives practical estimates for maps, messaging, video and hotspot use.
Google Fi’s international-use limit
Google Fi requires new service and new devices to be activated and used in the US for at least one day before travel. Its terms also say the service must be used primarily in the US.
Google’s current international roaming policy explains the timing:
- extended use outside the US, typically around 50 days, triggers an email and in-app warning;
- international data is suspended 30 days after that warning;
- calls and texts can continue after the data suspension;
- avoiding suspension after a first warning requires returning to the US and using data there for at least a week;
- restoring international data after suspension requires significant US data use for at least 30 days.
Military and State Department employees serving abroad can request an exception after verifying their status.
This rule is unlikely to affect a two-week holiday. It matters for a semester abroad, a long work assignment or life divided between countries. Atli has plan validity periods, but it does not require the customer to live in or return to a particular country. Buy the plan that covers the required dates, then add another to the same eSIM if the stay continues.
Calls, texts and keeping your number
Google Fi is the stronger product when you need one service to carry a US number, cellular calls, SMS and data. Unlimited Premium includes international texts in covered destinations. Cellular calls abroad usually cost $0.20 per minute, while some WiFi calls are included or charged according to the destination.
Atli is data-only. On a dual-SIM phone, set Atli as the cellular-data line and keep your primary SIM active for calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on your primary SIM to avoid unintended roaming data charges. If your carrier supports roaming, verification texts can still arrive on your primary SIM.
People who mainly call through WhatsApp, Telegram or FaceTime may not need Fi’s phone service abroad. People who rely on ordinary calls, short codes or SMS verification should check how their home number behaves overseas before choosing a data-only setup.
Setup before travel
Google Fi can activate through an eSIM or a physical SIM on a supported phone. Initial activation must happen in the US. The Fi app manages the plan and international settings, and international service is switched on by default for eligible plans.
Atli’s first installation should also happen before departure, while reliable WiFi is available. When you arrive, turn on the Atli eSIM and select it for mobile data. Keep the profile installed after the plan ends.
Before choosing either service, confirm that the phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. A compatible phone can often hold both Fi and Atli profiles, but the number of profiles that can be active at once depends on the model.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Google Fi Unlimited Premium if it is already your normal US phone plan, the destination is covered and the trip is short enough to stay clear of the extended-use policy. It gives you one number and one bill, with no travel eSIM setup.
Choose Atli if you do not qualify for Google Fi, want to keep another carrier or only want to pay for the data needed on this trip. It is also the safer fit for extended travel because its service is not tied to primarily using a US mobile plan in the US.
For Google Fi Flexible customers, compare the likely data charge with an Atli plan. Light use narrows the difference. Five or ten gigabytes can make the one-off plan much cheaper.
